Despite its controversial final episodes, HBO's unstoppable Game of Thrones earned 32 Emmy Award nominations, including best drama series — and shattered the record for the most nods for a show in a single season. Close behind were Amazon’s critic-favorite comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 19 nominations, and HBO’s surprise hit Chernobyl with 18. NBC’s Saturday Night Live also walked away with 18, and landed plenty of noms for its celebrity guest hosts, including Sandra Oh, Emma Thompson, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, John Mulaney and Adam Sandler. FX’s absorbing drama Fosse/Verdon and HBO’s dark comedy Barry tied with 17 each, while Netflix’s When They See Us, Ava DuVernay’s searing miniseries about the Central Park Five, scored 16 nominations. The 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards air Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
The Tony Awards sank deep into underworld Sunday as “Hadestown” took home a leading eight statues and made Broadway history as first production written and directed by women to win best musical. “The Ferryman” picked up four awards including best play, but it was Anais Mitchell’s folk-operatic reimagining of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth that led the night. Mitchell took home the Tony for score, while Rachel Chavkin, the lone woman in her category, won for direction of a musical. Ali Stroker made history as the first performer in a wheelchair to win a Tony, taking home honors for featured actress in the reimagining of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” The production also took the prize for musical revival.The cast of “The Prom” drove home the show’s themes of acceptance and inclusion with a same-sex kiss.
The 91st annual Academy Awards was a night of firsts for many Oscar winners and for the categories in which they won. The evening also delivered a surprise win for “Green Book,” which took home the Oscar for best picture, defeating strong competition from “Roma,” “A Star is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” For the first time in 30 years, there was no host to usher the audience from category to category. The show, instead, started with concert-like performance by Adam Lambert and the band Queen and segued into a pseudo monologue featuring Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph. Netflix ruled Sunday’s 76th annual Golden Globe Awards, with Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” and Chuck Lorre’s “The Kominsky Method” taking home some of the night’s biggest awards. “Bohemian Rhapsody” and star Rami Malek surprised with best drama and best actor in a drama wins, respectively. The best comedy prize also came as a shock, with “Green Book” winning over frontrunner “Vice.”
“Green Book” topped the night with three, while “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Roma” tied with two. On the TV side, “Kominsky Method” won the best comedy prize and best actor in a TV comedy for Michael Douglas. The series tied with “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” for most wins, with two. “Gianni Versace” claimed the best limited series award and best actor in a limited series for Darren Criss. FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story followed with four major wins, including for limited series lead actor Darren Criss.Game of Thrones, The Crown, Barry, The Americans, and Godless each scored two Monday-night wins.And in the slugfest of outlets, Netflix and HBO each wound up amassing 23 Emmy wins this year, after the streamer edged out the pay cabler in total nominations.
