The Respect for Marriage Act official repeals the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which restricted marriage to exclusively being between a man and woman. It was trumped by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, which established same-sex marriage as a 14th Amendment right.
