Is there a cure for disinformation, propaganda, and other offenses against the truth? Twitter’s answer has been to add fact-checks to misleading statements, a move that has led to a showdown with President Donald Trump. While this fight has been framed as an issue of free speech, ancient Greek philosophers, who worried deeply about what “fake news” meant for their own societies, would say it’s much more profound and more urgent than that. As technologically advanced as the fight between Twitter and Trump now seems, this dilemma is not new at all.
The top-scoring panoramic photos entered in the eleventh Epson International Pano Awards have just been announced. The contest is meant to showcase the best work of panoramic photographers around the world. Organizers reported that they received 5,859 entries from 1,452 photographers in 96 countries this year, competing for the top spots in five categories, for several special awards, and for some of the cash prizes offered. Contest organizers were once again kind enough to share some of the winners and top scorers here.

“The Crown” won best TV drama and “Schitt’s Creek” nabbed best TV comedy at the 78th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, providing moments of triumph during a broadcast that unspooled in the shadow of a global pandemic and amid a controversy that is roiling the cliquish organization behind the annual show. “Nomadland,” a low-budget drama about a woman traveling around the American West, scored a best motion picture drama prize, while making history for its director Chloé Zhao. She became only the second woman to win a best director prize, joining Barbra Streisand, who was recognized for directing “Yentl” in 1983.
