The List of Six Factors Most Likely to Add Years to Our Lives, and Life to Our Years

What prompted Dr. Katz to focus on the 'Super 6' list is a patient he saw in clinic who had experienced a potentially life-threatening cancer a year or so ago, and is now living in the aftermath of a surgical "cure." The patient went to his clinic looking for ways to reduce the likelihood of that cancer ever recurring, or any other ever occurring in the first place.  Such collisions with our mortality tend to sharpen the focus of patient and clinician alike. Whereas any given patient might like to know how to promote their health, this patient approached the topic as a veritable quest. As you may expect, the discussion with this patient was far-ranging. He wanted to know about everything he could do to bend fate and probability in his favor.

Three principal considerations drove their discussion:

1. Risk/Benefit Trade-Offs

2. The Magnitude of Any Likely Effect

3. The Quality of Underlying Evidence.

Those three considerations drove the discussion inevitably in the direction of the Super 6:

Feet, Forks, Fingers, Sleep, Stress and Love

WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company.  Its name comes from the project that was to find "water displacement" compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus "Water Displacement #40." The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. The Convair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. The workers were so pleased with the product, they began to use at home. The executives decided there might be a consumer market for it and put it in aerosol cans.
