The top-scoring panoramic photos entered in the eleventh Epson International Pano Awards have just been announced. The contest is meant to showcase the best work of panoramic photographers around the world. Organizers reported that they received 5,859 entries from 1,452 photographers in 96 countries this year, competing for the top spots in five categories, for several special awards, and for some of the cash prizes offered. Contest organizers were once again kind enough to share some of the winners and top scorers here.

These were really professional photographers who took these pictures. Note how sharp and clear most of the photos are and these are over a 100 years old.There aren't many old photos as good, remember they didn't have film or digital photo cards in those days. Most probable is that these were glass plate images and taken thru a pin hole type camera and the opening was timed just right to get a dark enough exposure. Developing was another tedious task which they had to be careful not to break the glass!

Greek philosopher Plato wrote of the legendary city of Atlantis, that sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Now photographer Andreas Franke has created a similar mythical underwater world for a new exhibition - but you can only see it with your scuba gear on. Divers can Only Access the Exhibition by Boat from Key West, Florida.  Armed with his camera, Mr Franke dove down to the Vandenberg, a United States missile tracking ship that sunk in 2009 off the coast of Key West, Florida, and used the spectacular images he took as a canvas for a surreal civilization that never existed.

Back in the day, years before the invention of color film, it was a common practice to hand tint photos in an attempt to create more realistic images.  Colorization of both still and motion pictures has been around for a long time. Early movies were often hand painted frame by frame to produce colorful artistic effects.
