Meet the openly gay male athletes competing for the USA at the Winter Olympics 2018. While this may be Gus Kenworthy’s second Olympics, it will be his first as being an openly gay freestyle skier. Winning a silver medal in Sochi, he said he felt ‘horrible’ about being closeted at the Russian Games. He came out in 2015, and has become a high profile star. ‘Very proud to be heading to Korea on behalf of my family, my hometown, the USA and the LGBTQ community!!! Woohoo!!!’ he said. Adam Rippon is a figure skater who was the US national champion in 2016 making his Olympic debut in Korea. "I don’t really care what other people think of me. I’m able to go out there and I’m really able to be unabashedly myself. I want somebody who’s young, who’s struggling, who’s not sure if it’s OK if they are themselves to know that it’s OK." He has also been asked on what it is like to be a gay man in sports. He said: " It’s exactly like being a straight athlete, only with better eyebrows." John Fennell came out as gay shortly after he luged for Canada in Sochi in 2018. Unfortunatelly his Olympian 2018 hopes just ended in the worst way with an accident but we hope he will continue fighting for his dream for the next Winter Olympics.
