How passenger planes of the future might look. |
Engineers have developed a concept plane which they believe, might be similar to passenger planes in 40 years time.
However in the past futurologists have been wide of the mark, with predictions of jet packs, flying cars, and cities in the sky.
Rajan Datar investigates whether, in the year 2050, we are really likely to be flying in transparent aeroplanes powered by solar energy.

Amphibious Garden: Physalia |
From Vincent Callebaut Architects, this impressive project is meant to navigate through the rivers in Europe in order to clean water make it drinkable. Its name comes from “Physalia physalis”, meaning “water bubble”. It is a project whose idea came from a major global issue which is the fact that one billion people nowadays don’t have access to drinking water. The giant bubble will actually be a floating garden, completely independent in terms of energy.

Passing Through |
Passing Through by Kristian Ulrich Larsen. The text used for the narration of “Passing Through” is part of a speech Serbia scientist and inventor Nicola Tesla delivered in 1893 at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Though today less known than figures like Edison and Einstein, Tesla was more or less the father of much of our modern technology, since he among other things developed the foundations of the European electrical system based on alternating currents and the principles of wireless radio communication. At the time he was deeply influenced by the Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach, believing that the world should be conceived as a whole where everything is interconnected influencing each other. And that energy is a force that runs through everything be it inorganic matter, organisms or human consciousness. According to this line of thought every single action has universal consequences, not unlike what the father of modern chaos theory Edward Lorenz in the 1960’s termed ‘the butterfly effect’.

Life in 2050 |
We are on the threshold of a new era. Our planet's climate is at risk. Natural resources are growing scarce. In 2050, the number of people living in cities will be greater than the entire population of the Earth today. That's why researchers, inventors, and engineers need to be more creative today than ever before. Computers as medical assistants, robots as household servants, sensory organs for electric cars, buildings as energy providers, farms in skyscrapers, power plants in the desert and on the high seas, supercomputers the size of a pea - these are not visions but almost tangible realities in laboratories all over the globe. In a unique survey, science journalist and industry insider Ulrich Eberl vividly describes the key trends that will shape our lives - and how we ourselves can help to invent the world of tomorrow

Inventions: Self-Healing Polymer Fixes Scratches |
Researchers at Case Western Reserve University say fixing scratches on cars and furniture may be cheap and easy to do yourself in the not-too-distant future. Together with partners in the USA and Switzerland, they have developed a polymer-based material that can heal itself when placed under ultraviolet light for less than a minute.
