Page 1 of 2 After seven years of preparation and a good dose of last-minute nerves, Londoners were thrilled to present to the world the opening ceremonies marking the official start of a historic event that has commandeered their city and prompted its biggest security operation in peacetime. One of the highlights of the opening ceremonies was the "stunt" arrival of the Queen to the olympic stadium a la James Bond 007, jumping from a helicopter.

The Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies trace their origins as far back as the ancient Games in Greece and have evolved over the centuries. The London 2012 Ceremonies will be spectacular celebrations of British culture watched by an estimated global audience of four billion people. The Team Welcome Ceremonies formally invite every nation to the Games, while the Victory Ceremonies are the moments every athlete has worked towards.
