Thousands of people gathered in front of the Pittsburgh synagogue in Squirrel Hill where 11 people were killed and others injured after a man allegedly opened fire during services Saturday morning. To pay tribute to the lives that were lost, the mourners crowded the street fronting the Tree of Life synagogue, holding candles, singing songs and pleading silently with signs to end the hate and violence. While the Squirrel Hill neighborhood has attracted a diverse range of residents in recent years, it remains a historic hub for Pittsburgh’s Jewish population. Drew Barkley, the executive director of the nearby synagogue Temple Sinai, told Time magazine on Saturday that the community is tight-knit. “The sad part is that people are waiting to find out who the dead are because it’s such a close-knit community there’s like one degree of separation and chances are everyone will know at least one person who died,” Barkley said.

At least 1,000 people attended a candlelight vigil Thursday night for the 17 people killed in a Florida school shooting, some of the mourners sobbing openly as the victims' names were read aloud. Seventeen angels took center stage and the friends, family and loved ones who talked about the victims that those angels symbolized. Members of the football team at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School walked together on Thursday February 15, 2018 before a vigil to honor victims of the mass shooting at their school in Parkland, Florida.

Tab Hunter (July 11, 1931-July 8, 2018) , the epitome of the blond teen heartthrob in the '50s, who had a successful career as a pop singer and later gamely parodied his sex-symbol image in the John Waters film "Polyester," has died. Hunter's passing was announced on the official Facebook page of the 2015 documentary about his life, "Tab Hunter Confidential," which noted he died days before turning 87.
Tom Wolfe, an innovative journalist and novelist whose technicolor, wildly punctuated prose brought to life the worlds of California surfers, car customizers, astronauts and Manhattan’s moneyed status-seekers in works like “The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby,” “The Right Stuff” and “Bonfire of the Vanities,” died on Monday, May 14th 2018 in a Manhattan hospital. He was 88. He had lived in New York since joining The New York Herald Tribune as a reporter in 1962. In his use of novelistic techniques in his nonfiction, Mr. Wolfe, beginning in the 1960s, helped create the enormously influential hybrid known as the New Journalism.
