Two television journalists were killed during a live broadcast in Virginia on Wednesday, August 25, 2015 shot by a suspect who was a former employee of the TV station and who called himself a "powder keg" of anger over what he saw as racial discrimination at work and elsewhere in the United States. The suspect, 41-year-old Vester Flanagan, shot himself as police pursued him on a Virginia highway hours after the shooting. Flanagan, who was African-American, died later at a hospital, police said.

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Lorena Rojas, after news of her passing quickly became viral and a worldwide trend on Twitter. The 44-year-old actress had been battling with cancer and she lost the fight on Monday February 16, 2015.
"With a profound sadness we want to inform the fans of Lorena Rojas and her friends from the press, that the Mexican actress and singer died today in Miami after taking with courage and positivity a battle with cancer," the press released issued by LatinWe read. "Lorena, who with bravery defied the sickness at different stages since 2008, had her last breath placidly in her home, surrounded by the love of her family members, her boyfriend and her closest friends."

Outside Copenhagen's main synagogue a young woman in tears placed flowers at the gates where people gathered Sunday in a mood of fear and defiance after a lone gunman claimed two lives in their city.
The grieving residents stood with their arms around each other in a sad solidarity as they remembered one of the victims, a 37-year-old member of Denmark's small Jewish community, who was killed outside the synagogue shortly after midnight as a bar mitzvah was being celebrated inside.

The Soviets liberated Auschwitz, the largest killing center and concentration camp, in January 1945. The Nazis had forced the majority of Auschwitz prisoners to march westward (in what would become known as "death marches"), and Soviet soldiers found only several thousand emaciated prisoners alive when they entered the camp.
There was abundant evidence of mass murder in Auschwitz. The retreating Germans had destroyed most of the warehouses in the camp, but in the remaining ones the Soviets found personal belongings of the victims. They discovered hundreds of thousands of men's suits, more than 800,000 women's outfits, and more than 14,000 pounds of human hair.

Among the dozen deaths in the terrorist attack on the Paris office of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo was its editor and principal cartoonist, Stéphane Charbonnier, who built his career on defiance and the right to insult religion. Editor firmly stood behind his staff's right to free speech, even when it was ridiculed as provocation. Additional shootdowns occured in a Kosher Market where four people were killed and at a gas station where a police woman was shot to death.

Should they mark their solidarity with their colleagues – and their fidelity to freedom of expression – by publishing the cartoons the assailants claim had provoked them? Should they instead consider the concern of offending their own readers and even the safety of their staff?
