For the first time in 42 years, Chile's Calbuco volcano has erupted into life, spewing tons of ash and lava. As the surrounding countryside is being evacuated, weather conditions have caused a spectacular lighting storm around the peak. The resulting photos are both terrifying and mesmerizing.

These were really professional photographers who took these pictures. Note how sharp and clear most of the photos are and these are over a 100 years old.

There aren't many old photos as good, remember they didn't have film or digital photo cards in those days. Most probable is that these were glass plate images and taken thru a pin hole type camera and the opening was timed just right to get a dark enough exposure. Developing was another tedious task which they had to be careful not to break the glass!

This amazing natural formation of mountains are part of the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in China. Layers of different colored sandstone and minerals were pressed together over 24 million years and then buckled up by tectonic plates, creating a rich "layer cake" action and creating spectacular rainbow mountains.
