Several passengers and crew members of flight 93 of United Airlines made telephone calls aboard the flight and learned about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. As a result of this knowledge, the passengers decided to mount an assault against the hijackers in an attempt to regain control of the aircraft. All passengers and the four hijackers were killed in a heroic action by passengers of the flight, avoiding further loss of lives before reaching their target.  The final target was believed to have been the Capitol Building or the White House, in Washington D.C.

Long believed to be hiding in caves, bin Laden was tracked down in a costly, custom-built hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan not far from a Pakistani military academy and the capital city Islamabad. In the dark of night, U.S. helicopters approached a high-walled compound in Pakistan on a mission to capture or kill one of the world's most notorious terrorist leaders. Less than 40 minutes later -- early Monday morning in Pakistan -- Osama bin Laden was dead, along with four others inside the complex, and the U.S. forces departed with the slain al Qaeda leader's body to fulfill a vow that originated shortly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

The military operation took mere minutes, and there were no U.S. casualties. U.S. Blackhawk helicopters ferried about two dozen troops from Navy SEAL Team Six, a top military counter-terrorism unit, into the compound identified by the CIA as bin Laden's hideout — and back out again in less than 40 minutes. Bin Laden was shot in the head, officials said, after he and his bodyguards resisted the assault. Three adult males were also killed in the raid, including one of bin Laden's sons, whom officials did not name. One of bin Laden's sons, Hamza, is a senior member of al-Qaida. U.S. officials also said one woman was killed when she was used as a shield by a male combatant, and two other women were injured.  A big boost to the intelligence community who have been after Osama's trail for almost a decade.

The body of Osama bin Laden was buried at sea in a stunning finale to a furtive decade on the run. The U.S. official who disclosed the burial at sea said it would have been difficult to find a country willing to accept the remains. Obama said the remains had been handled in accordance with Islamic custom, which requires burial within 24 hours of death.

Although many of the relatives who died during 9-11 expressed a very emotional reaction to the news, also explained that even though the death of a person is not a cause of celebration, this instance is an exception. It brings a closure and relief for many who have been searching for justice over the death of their loved ones.  Minutes after the announcement of the capture and death of Osama bin Laden by President Obama, Americans gathered outside the White House and Ground Zero in New York City among many other sites around the country and the world cheering and celebrating the successful accomplishment of this mission by the US Top Counter-terrorism Unit. In addition, the members of this unit, which involves all divisions of the US Military, were able to obtain very important information in Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan that will help the intelligence community in further their search for terrorist cells and other members of al-Qaida throughout the world.
