Two decades after her death, Princess Diana’s charisma endures. So does the tragic story of the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry. Diana was just 36 when she died after the car she was riding in crashed in a Paris tunnel on Aug. 31, 1997. But before her death — and after splitting with Prince Charles — she was still turning heads and attracting headlines. So it comes as no surprise that on the 20th anniversary, everyone is finding a way to remember her. Princess Diana's presence will certainly be felt during Prince Harry's wedding on Saturday, May 19, 2018.

Charles and Diana's Wedding

It was—and remains—the wedding of our age. On July 29, 1981, 20-year-old Lady Diana Spencer married Charles, Prince of Wales, in an elaborate ceremony before 3,500 people at St. Paul's Cathedral (which seats more people than Westminster Abbey, the traditional site for royal nuptials) to become Diana, Princess of Wales. It was watched by an estimated 750 million people worldwide. The so-called "fairytale wedding of the century" was worthy of its billing. Lady Diana wore a dress designed by David & Elizabeth Emanuel made of silk taffeta and antique lace and decorated with 10,000 pearls. It featured a 25-foot train and was valued at 9,000 British pounds (about $36,000 in today's dollars). Diana arrived at the cathedral in a glass coach that was a bit too small to comfortably fit her, the dress and her father. She walked up the red-carpeted aisle escorted by six mounted police officers. As with any wedding there were glitches. Diana said her soon-to-be husband's name incorrectly—calling him Phillip Charles instead of Charles Phillip. And the Prince said he'd offer her "thy goods" rather than "my worldly goods." Nonetheless, Charles and Diana were bound and went on to have two sons—William Arthur Phillip Louis, now 31; and Henry Charles Albert David, 28—before their marriage ended in divorce in 1996.

On August 31, 1997, Diana was fatally injured in a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. The accident also resulted in the deaths of her companion Dodi Fayed and the driver, Henri Paul, who was the acting security manager of the Hôtel Ritz Paris. The televised funeral, on 6 September, was watched by a British television audience that peaked at 32.10 million, which was one of the United Kingdom's highest viewing figures ever. Millions more watched the event around the world.

Prince William and Kate Middleton's Wedding

Among the invited guests to Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding on April 29th, 2011 was Shozna, who was then 20, a homeless girl who was rescued from the streets by Centrepoint, a homeless charity supported by Princess Diana.

In 1910 the prince first heard Shozna's heartbreaking story at a gala for the organization where she shared how she was forced onto the streets after having major heart surgery. The prince was so moved that he broke with royal protocol and gave the girl a hug. He became a patron of the charity in 2005. After receiving the wedding invitation, Shozna said: "I'm so very excited. Kate seems born to be a princess and I think she'll look traditional and elegant. I can't believe the Beckhams, Elton John and his husband, Prince Harry and all the little bridesmaids will be there. I want to say to Prince William: Congratulations. Thank you for inviting me and thank you for making people feel like they are part of the world instead of being alone." Less than a year before, after surviving a stroke, Shozna was living at homeless shelters with drug addicts. In October 2009 she was paralyzed by a stroke which affected the right side of her body and left her unable to speak. Doctors discovered that the schoolgirl had a hole in her heart and she spent two months in a hospital recovering from the stroke before having surgery to repair her heart. After months of speech and physical therapy the high school student found herself homeless and lived with various relatives until she was forced to find emergency housing in a hostel. Two weeks later Centrepoint found her a room at a 40-bed homeless shelter. Later on she got a job and started a new life.

In 2017, the family celebrated the 4th birthday of the Prince of Cambridge on July 22 and the second birthday of Princess Charollete of Cambridge.  we present a special tribute to the most beloved and humanitarian Princess of all times and throughout the world. While early reports have speculated that the royal couple picked the name George Alexander Louis in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's father, among one of many reasons, there may be an ode to Prince William's late mother Princess Diana in the moniker as well.  It turns out that Diana had three nephews named, you guessed it, George, Alexander, and Louis. In fact, the one other nephew she had is named Charles, which Kate Middleton and her hubby couldn't pick for glaringly obvious reasons.  Kate and William chose to name their baby baby girld Charlotte Elizabeth Diana after The Queen and William's late mother, the Princess of Wales.

Prince Harry

Prince Henry of Wales KCVO (Henry Charles Albert David was born on September 15, 1984),  familiarly known as Prince Harry.  He is the younger son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales. At the time of his birth, he was third in the line of succession to succeed his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, but is currently fifth in line after his father, his elder brother Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and William's children, George and Charlotte.

Prince Harry is painfully talking about the moments his mother, the late Princess Diana, was dying:  “One of the hardest things to come to terms with is the fact that the people who chased her into the tunnel were the same people who were taking photographs of her dying in the backseat of her car,” the 32-year-old royal said in the 90-minute film Diana, 7 Days. “William and I know that, we’ve been told that numerous times by people that know that was the case. She had quite a severe head injury, but she was very much alive on the backseat and the same people who caused the accident, instead of helping, were taking photographs of her dying on the back seat. Then those photographs made... made their way back to news desks in this country.”  Princess Diana passed away on August 31, 1997 after a car accident with her companion Dodi Fayed and the driver, Henri Paul in Paris, France. The car she was in was trying to avoid paparazzi.
